Paint Correction for Ceramic Coating
Compare real preparation scopes before ceramic coating. Separate cleaning, light polishing and correction, then ask an installer what your paint needs.

Before booking ceramic coating after a repaint, get the repairer's approval for the exact coating and its preparation process. There is no single waiting period established by the documents compared below. A paint drying schedule, permission to polish and permission to install a coating answer different questions.
Coating can be considered once the repaired finish is cleared for that work. Postpone application if the painter and coating installer cannot agree on compatibility or timing. Neither a glossy appearance nor a collection date settles those questions.
Gtechniq's repaint FAQ recommends at least 72 hours between painting and applying its coatings. It also tells owners to consult the body shop or painter because paint systems and finishes vary. That second instruction matters just as much as the number.
The company describes its coatings as gas permeable. That is Gtechniq's product claim, not a measured finding from this site or permission to use another coating on the same schedule. If the repairer specifies a longer wait or a different preparation method, have the businesses resolve it before work starts.
Do not substitute a coating's post-application curing time for the wait after painting. Our ceramic coating curing guide covers water exposure and washing after installation; the repaired paint must first be accepted for installation itself.
On October 16, 2026, we made a documentation comparison of four selected primary-source examples: a paint manufacturer's technical sheet, a coating manufacturer's repaint FAQ and product instructions, and a collision shop's own care policy. We chose them because each names an activity and a timing condition. These are published instructions, not tested cure times or a representative survey.
| Source and scope | Published milestone | What it establishes for your booking |
|---|---|---|
| PPG D8175 technical sheet, RLD400V, pages 3–4 | With D8745 accelerator thinner: through-dry in 5 minutes at 60°C metal temperature; polishing after the indicated bake and cooling. | A drying and polishing procedure for this paint system. It does not supply a ceramic-coating approval. |
| Gtechniq repaint FAQ | Minimum 72 hours after painting, with painter/body-shop guidance. | A coating-brand recommendation that still requires the repairer's input. |
| Hilltop Collision Center refinishing care | Its PPG Envirobase care page says no waxing or polishing for the first 90 days. | This shop's published owner-care restriction. It does not name a ceramic coating or approve one. |
| Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light instructions | Keep the vehicle indoors for 12 hours after application. | A storage requirement after coating, separate from the age of the repaired paint. |
The useful finding is the mismatch in activities: five minutes, 72 hours, 90 days and 12 hours cannot be ranked as competing answers to “when can I coat my repair?” The paint product, repair process, intended treatment and starting point of each interval must match.
The PPG sheet is dated May 2016 and remains available on PPG's server; its current D8175 product page also advertises the rapid drying cycle. Ask the painter for the applicable local technical sheet and actual materials used. Do not infer that Hilltop's policy describes every PPG repair or that the products in different rows form an approved combination.
Ask the repairer for the information the coating installer needs:
Send that record to the coating installer with the exact product name. Ask the installer to confirm acceptance of the repaired surfaces and identify any unresolved requirement. Keep the agreed date and procedure with both invoices.
If one business says “ready” and the other says “wait,” ask what activity each means. Ready for collection, polishing, waxing or coating may have been used as shorthand. Obtain a shared answer about the actual job rather than choosing the shorter number.
A generic full-car correction package does not explain how the installer will handle the repair. Ask which panels need cleaning only, which need polishing, and which should be left alone until the repairer clears further work.
PPG's D8175 example shows why the drying process matters: its technical sheet distinguishes polishing after baking and cooling from polishing after air drying. It is a professional paint-system instruction, not a DIY recipe or a rule for every clearcoat.
Have the painter and installer approve the proposed preparation cleaner too. Do not assume a solvent wipe, abrasive or clay treatment is suitable merely because it is normally used before coating. Our paint-correction guide helps separate basic preparation from additional defect removal when comparing the scope.
Inspect and document the repair before coating. Discuss color, finish or other concerns with the repairer first so there is a clear record of the condition handed to the detailer. Coating should not replace resolving an outstanding paint-work complaint.
Request a panel-specific plan rather than assuming the whole car needs recoating. Ask the detailer to inspect the repaired area and surrounding surfaces, identify what treatment is proposed, and explain the basis for any wider work.
The quote should identify the panels, preparation, coating product, price and any return visit. If a previous coating had registered coverage, ask its provider how the repair and new application will be documented. Do not assume the paint repair automatically renews or cancels the coating warranty; check the written coating terms.
For a recently purchased vehicle, disclose known paint repairs even if it is sold as new. Our new-car coating guide covers the broader inspection and package decision; a recent refinish needs this additional timing check.
Obtain temporary care instructions from the repairer before pickup. Hilltop's page, for example, calls for hand washing with cool water and mild car-wash solution during its initial care period, and warns against dry wiping. Those instructions belong to that shop's policy; request the directions for your repair.
Ask how to deal with bird droppings, sap, rain and parking conditions during the wait. Avoid adding an interim wax, sealant or spray coating unless the repairer permits that product. A temporary treatment also needs to be disclosed to the eventual coating installer.
After coating, get a separate handover schedule: application completion time, sheltered storage, permitted water exposure and first wash. Crystal Serum Light's indoor-storage requirement above illustrates why finishing the repaint wait does not finish the aftercare planning.
When comparing coating shops, send the same repair record and ask each business to quote the same panels and approved preparation. The installer checklist can help establish who is responsible for each part of the work.
The sources above do not establish one interval for every paint-and-coating combination. Ask for a date tied to the actual repair materials and intended treatment. A general wax restriction is a reason to seek clarification before coating.
A bake schedule alone does not answer that. Confirm what the paint instructions permit after the recorded process, then have the repairer and coating installer agree on application and preparation.
Give both businesses the paint date, coating name, preparation details and application date. Ask whether inspection or any corrective work is needed before attempting removal or polishing. Those dates alone do not establish that damage has occurred.
